Mission Restoration
Please join us in making restoration count.
Mission Restoration is an initiative by WWF-Canada in collaboration with lands and rightsholders across Canada to track, monitor and increase major restoration efforts consistent with the Government of Canada’s national and international targets.
Mission Restoration will provide insights into how restoration actions are adding up throughout Canada along with the benefits to nature, communities and climate that restoration brings.
Background
The restoration of damaged ecosystems in Canada is critical to reversing the loss of biodiversity, supporting the priorities of First Nations, Inuit and Métis, and maximizing ecosystem carbon sequestration to fight climate change. However, the organizations, government agencies, and lands and rightsholders who are leading important restoration efforts are acting largely on their own, without the perspective of how their work is contributing to collective results.
Mission Restoration will:
- track and count current restoration initiatives
- build momentum and galvanize organizations to undertake new and complex restoration projects
- inspire investments around international restoration commitments
- raise awareness of the benefits of restoration for nature and climate
Support from Environment and Climate Change Canada
“Canada has committed to restoration through various international agreements, including the GBF and the Bonn Challenge. Achieving restoration at this scale will require all our combined efforts, which is why we’re supportive of WWF-Canada’s Mission Restoration. It will allow organizations doing large-scale complex ecosystem restoration to document and report their activities, ensuring the work contributes to Canada’s restoration goals.” — Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada
What you can do
If you’re an organization working on a major restoration effort of at least 5 hectares or more, we invite you to join us to track the restoration of land, freshwater and coastal zones throughout Canada. Be a part of the collective story of restoration in this country and make sure your efforts are counted and recognized.
Why participate?
- Ensure your restoration activities are counted as part of federal government commitments such as the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), Bonn Challenge and The Freshwater Challenge.
- Provide input and leadership in demonstrating how restoration can and should be measured and reported in Canada.
- Access a growing network of government organizations, corporate partners and ENGOs supporting restoration activities as part of an alignment behind the GBF.
- Position yourself as a leader in implementing nature-based climate solutions that restore habitat and benefit biodiversity.
