St. John’s got a brand new bag… and it’s BLUE!

It’s a sea of blue (bags) on the way to work in the morning, with mounds of recycling awaiting pickup from waste management personnel.  A lovely sight for this conservationist!  Unfortunately, after the holiday seasons (I’m talking Christmas and Valentine’s day) came to an end, things such as wrapping paper, cards, gift boxes and bags, and bottles, didn’t avoid the garbage, and are still not part of the curbside recycling program. This is due to the fact that these materials may contain metals and plastics, which could contaminate the end recycled product.  The MMSB Green Depots, however, are available for bottle drop-off.

But if you followed a green mantra and wrapped presents in re-usable materials, re-gifted that one gift from last year that you felt was just right for someone else, or were creative in your presentation and used recyclable materials for the ones you love, you probably avoided the hassle of all those extra garbage bags of wrapping paper in your living room after the post-gift extravaganza.
At WWF-Canada, we are trying to help Canadians reduce their ecological footprint. We envision a world where we all reduce, reuse and recycle, which is why we encourage green initiatives, such as the “Curb it” recycling program in St. John’s.  This will also help support further conservation efforts towards making a greener tomorrow.
