Gifts that give twice
This beloved stuffie—that Sophie calls “Panda”—has survived numerous mishaps and adventures in the washing machine, and remains one of my daughter’s favourite Christmas gifts.
But “Panda” is getting some competition these days. Sophie recently received a WWF symbolic adoption kit that includes an oh-so-cute plush panda bear—along with an adoption certificate, a panda collector card and an info booklet that features conservation work and cool facts on pandas. (Older sister, Liv, got the adorable penguin adoption kit).

Gifts like these don’t just mean a lot to my kids—what child doesn’t adore animals? They’re extra special to me because I love Christmas presents that are more than just playthings and, actually make a difference in our world. And I’m not alone.
New research conducted by Ipsos Reid for WWF shows that 83% of us find the holidays too materialistic and 90 per cent of Canadians want to make the season more meaningful. This means many moms and dads will be giving charitable gifts like the symbolic adoption kit to family and friends this year.
As a WWF staffer and someone who cares deeply about our planet, I’m hoping that stockings from coast to coast will be filled with pandas, penguins, polar bears and more of the 22 different wildlife species in our symbolic adoption kits. And remember, these gifts aren’t just for kids. I’ve got a caribou on my wish list.
