We don't need to destroy nature to ‘Build Canada’

The federal government’s Bill C-5 threatens the laws that protect nature. Add your voice today.

Speak Up

Bill C-5, the federal government’s plan to fast-track “nation-building” development projects, risks damaging the nation it is supposed to defend. Nature is an important part of Canada’s economy — and its identity — but getting the balance right is essential.

As written, the Building Canada Act gives cabinet the power to exempt designated projects from critical environmental legislation such as the Species at Risk Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act and Fisheries Act. Without the careful review these laws are meant to ensure, it could lead to draining wetlands, destroying habitat or fast-tracking projects in fragile ecosystems.

We all want to strengthen our economy to withstand external threats. The best way to do that is to create prosperity through the stewardship of our natural resources and the critical ecosystem services they provide.

How can you help?

We’ve seen the costs of this approach before. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the past. There’s a better way forward, one where nature is valued — not sidelined. Voice your concern by writing a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Cabinet, asking for amendments to Bill C-5 that enshrine protections for nature.
