WWF welcomes high ranking from MoneySense charity list
By Sara Oates, Vice President, Finance & Administration and Chief Financial Officer, WWF-Canada
With hundreds of Canadian charities doing important work, we understand that it can be tough to choose where to donate your hard-earned dollars. There are a number of factors to consider, from what kind of work you want to support to how effectively your funds are being used. That’s why we were so pleased that WWF received such a high rating (an A-) from MoneySense in its 2013 Charity 100 rankings, looking at ‘which of Canada’s 100 biggest charities are best-in-class when it comes to spending donor money wisely.’
The rankings are designed to be one of the tools – along with doing your own research – that can help you determine which not-for-profits deserve your funds. They are designed to assess ‘program spending efficiency, fundraising costs, governance and transparency and the size of the organization’s reserves. A final grade is then awarded to a charity based on how well it scores in those four categories.’
Here at WWF, we are constantly striving to make the best use of our donors’ dollars. We’re proud of our financial record, but we’re even prouder of what is behind that: a sound foundation for the growth of our organization and a strong investment in the future of our planet. That includes leading conservation efforts like developing innovative financing systems for marine conservation, launching our freshwater assessment program, and building vital partnerships with Coastal First Nations to protect the future of B.C.’s Great Bear Region.
Beyond MoneySense’s ranking, WWF has also received accreditation in Imagine Canada’s first-ever national Standards Program for Canadian charities. This speaks to our commitment to hold ourselves to the highest possible standards on everything from transparency to fundraising practices.
