Volunteers. What would we do without them?

Well, they may not literally hold the organization up, but they certainly do figuratively.  All the people that volunteer their time make so many things possible – from small (like envelope stuffing) to large (like event organization and execution). They are just brilliant and we love them so much!
Heather Crochetiere is a super example of an outstanding volunteer. We thought we’d explore her background and get some insight about volunteering at WWF!

To start, can  you tell us a bit about yourself? What you’re taking in school, your interests, etc.
I did an undergraduate degree at McMaster University in Biology, specializing in biodiversity and a minor in GIS. At McMaster I was involved in the Science community and the Biodiversity Guild, which is a group that aims to raise awareness about local biodiversity issues. I’m currently in grad school at the University of Waterloo doing a Master’s of Environmental Studies. In addition, I am lucky enough to be working with WWF for the months of November and December to help provide customer service for the holiday gift season.
What made you decide to volunteer with WWF?
I’d always had a lot of respect for WWF as an organization and thought that it would be something I’d like to get involved with one day. Then earlier this year, at the Green Living Show in Toronto, I heard Gerald Butts speak about the work that WWF Canada is doing with industry and the importance of these partnerships moving forward. I felt inspired by WWF-Canada’s approach and past successes and I knew that it was definitely an organization to which I wanted to contribute. I started volunteering shortly after that.
What has the experience been like so far?
My experience thus far has been nothing less than entirely positive. Everyone here is really welcoming and great to work with. I’ve gotten amazing experience and it feels great to be making a contribution to something I really care about. It doesn’t matter how big or small the task is that you’re doing that day, you still feel amazing knowing that you’re helping.
What have you learned/what advice would you share with others?
My biggest piece of advice would be to be enthusiastic! It’s a great organization to be working with and you’ll get back what you put in to it.
Thanks Heather!
