The 2012 Vancouver Triathlon is in two weeks and we need your help!
By Lauren Bishop, Volunteer Resources Coordinator, WWF-Canada
When and how did you first get involved volunteering for WWF?
My name is Angela Akerman and I first got involved with volunteering for WWF about 3-4 years ago, I had participated in the MS bikeathon and volunteered with the walkathon and one of the volunteers suggested that I sign up for the Vancouver WWF Triathlon and so I did.

What about the Vancouver Triathlon inspired you to participate?
I love the fact that this Triathlon allows for individuals to compete at their level either olympic distance or sprint distance and so you get a very diverse turnout in athletes. I think this is awsome, I would try it if I didn’t have a heart condition!
What tips would you have for new Vancouver Triathlon volunteers?
My advice to the new volunteers is be happy, if everyone is of good cheer the athletes really appreciate it and it helps them keep going, jump up and down, clap, yell out encourgament, it all is appreciated by the athletes and other volunteers. If the weather is forcasting rain, bring boots, pants and jacket, plus umbrella to be on the safe side, when it rains it really rains, If sunny bring sunscreen, a good hat and glasses and an enviromentally friendly water bottle!

What do you do in your daily life to be more sustainable or environmentally-friendly?
I am a rabid recycler, my landfill output per week is usually 1-2 small shopping bags per week, I am lucky I live in Burnaby and we have the ability to put any food scraps into the yard waste bin, we have a blue box for plastics and tins and a blue bag for newspapers and a yellow bag for other types of paper, cardboard etc… so I really recycle and I also take bottles and cans back to the recycling depot, best thing to do ever!
