The 2012 Vancouver Triathlon is coming up and we need your help!

By Lauren Bishop, Volunteer Resources Coordinator, WWF-Canada
When and how did you first get involved volunteering for WWF?

I got involved with WWF a few years ago when I started educating myself on the consequences of climate change and the extinction of wildlife to both nature and humans alike.  My cousin also helped me tremendously. Her efforts in opening my eyes to animal extinction and abuse will never be forgotten. Last April, I got involved volunteering as a Registration Team member at the CN Tower Climb in Toronto and had a great time interacting with over 6000 climbers!

What about the Vancouver Triathlon inspired you to participate?

I was inspired by the Vancouver Triathlon because I first volunteered at the CN Tower Climb and was really impressed with the turnout and I thought “this is big!”, so when I realized I would be visiting my dad in Vancouver during the period of the Triathlon, I thought it would only be another great opportunity to support WWF, our athletes and fundraisers. The feeling you get when you are involved in such a special moment is priceless.
What motivated you to encourage your dad to volunteer as well?

What motivated me to inspire my dad to volunteer is knowing the facts, that he is an amazing lover of animals and mother earth and it makes him happy to see so many people come together for a great cause.  I knew he wouldn’t say no, especially that it was on his last day of his visit with his daughter 😉
What do you do in your daily life to be more sustainable or environmentally-friendly?
In my daily life, I am an extremely energy-conscious person. I turn off and unplug everything that is not in use in my apartment. I turn off the water in between brushing/washing.  I use cold water more often than warm. I am constantly trying to educate people and make them aware of our environment by joining along to pick up trash and recycling (reduce, reuse, and recycle).  I travel by transit, bike, blade, ski, and walk everywhere!  Every day is a new day to learn something about our environment and nature and how we could save it; my brain capacity for that is limitless!
