St. John River Summit finds community connections key to river health

This year the St. John River Summit came to the city of Saint John, NB for the third year. About 300 people concerned with the health of the river gathered at the point where the St. John River meets the Bay of Fundy. A multi-faceted event, the summit was a great opportunity to connect partners, agencies and people from around this vast working watershed to learn, experience, discuss and share what they know about the river – and generate ideas for how to care for it together.

This year’s summit was a collaborative effort between WWF-Canada and ACAP Saint John, a community-based watershed organization that has a strong track record of accomplishing activities that support a healthy river, harbor and bay.
The summit kicked off with a number of talks about the health of the watershed and more specifically the on-going effort in Saint John to improve harbor health and monitor the on-going improvement.  The talks were followed by an afternoon trade fair, followed by a tour of some ACAP Saint John projects, like the Tin Can Beach restoration, and was capped off with a group kayak in the harbor – a  perfect mix of learning followed by a hands-on experience!

WWF congratulates all of the partners and participants that made the St. John River Summit 2015 a great success! It’s encouraging for all who care about our freshwater resources across the country to see the coordinated and continued efforts being made in the Saint John region to support healthy water. This community provides examples we can all learn from and replicate, ultimately resulting in healthy communities, habitats, species and people.
