Behind the scenes: Discovering the Last Ice Area
On January 25th, Canadian and international Arctic experts from WWF explored that very question. During a brief presentation for a small gathering of our supporters in Toronto, they discussed what it means to conserve the region that holds the future for summer sea ice, both for people and vulnerable species like the polar bear. This is the Last Ice Area.

Speakers include:
Geoff York: With 21 years of work and life experiences in Alaska’s Arctic and 14 years of polar bear focused field work, he is WWF’s foremost polar bear expert. Most recently, Geoff worked as a biologist and program manager for the US Geological Survey’s Polar Bear Project, the leading polar bear research team in the U.S.
Clive Tesar: He grew up in Canada’s Northwest Territories and has spent the last 13 years analyzing and communicating Canadian Arctic and circumpolar issues, working for Indigenous peoples, governments, and NGOs. Today, as the Head of Communications and External Relations for WWF’s Global Arctic Program, Clive is helping build critical relationships between WWF and Northern communities.
Host, Martin von Mirbach, Director of Canada’s Arctic program: An experienced forest conservationist and sustainable development educator, Martin led the development of the Forest Stewardship Council’s Canadian Boreal Standard. Now, Martin brings his vast experience in environmental stewardship and relationship building to Canada’s Arctic challenges.
