These amazing supporters are putting nature first

Whether in their schoolyards or offices, these incredible supporters are helping wildlife and nature through WWF-Canada.

THE DALTON SCHOOL, Third party fundraisers, Toronto
Since 2015, the Dalton School has been hosting its very own scoot-a-thon in support of wildlife and nature through WWF-Canada. Students and staff alike support this “wheel-good” event by riding their scooters to raise funds. Students select a different species to support each time, and this year they’ve chosen polar bears – dubbing their scooter team the Polar Rollers. Past scoot-a-thons have supported giant pandas, leatherback turtles, African elephants, and dugongs, a medium-sized marine mammal related to manatees. To date, Dalton has donated more than $27,000, and this year alone raised over $8,000. Way to go, Polar Rollers!

ROBERT MONICO, Member of LP@W and LP@C, Peterborough, Ont.
Robert Monico, a long-time nature and wildlife lover, first became a WWF-Canada supporter through his role as a sustainability projects co-ordinator at Fleming College. The Peterborough, Ont. school is also one of our founding Living Planet @ Campus partners.
“During that time, I began thinking about all of WWF-Canada’s Living Planet programs and realized that post-secondary institutions have a unique opportunity to simultaneously run the Living Planet at Campus and Living Planet at Work programs,” says Robert. He realized both initiatives would enable “the entire campus community, including those in support or behind-the-scenes roles, to participate in sustainability.”
Since the implementation of LP@C and LP@W at the college, Robert has led shoreline cleanups and a team in the annual CN Tower Climb for Nature. He and also plans to host an annual BioBlitz (a concentrated period of biological surveying to record all species in an area) at each of Fleming’s college campuses, located in Peterborough, Cobourg, Haliburton and Lindsay. “The most rewarding aspect of these programs is the community involvement,” Robert says. “I’ve always been a believer in grassroots initiatives and the power that a community has to implement change.”
