You and your Franchise — What your Vote Really Means

An early draft of the text used the word franchise (as in: “when the opportunity comes to exercise your franchise, on October 14, 2008 in Canada’s next federal election, you should take it.”) In the end, we chose to use the words rights, instead–and that’s the phrasing you’ll find when you click on the link below.

I lobbied for the word franchise because its definition is more specific, leaning more toward right of membership, than plain old ordinary rights. (We call sports team franchises, for instance, because they are members of a defined sporting league.) That’s closer to the definition I think is more accurate when we urged people to vote in the upcoming federal election. It reminds us all that we belong to a collective called Canada, that we are members of that entity, that we each have voting shares in how it should be run.
