WWF-Canada quiz finds Canadians relate to caribou
(TORONTO: December 7, 2010) — Canadians feel at home in both the mountains and forests, are very social and love to travel – just like caribou!
A new WWF-Canada Facebook quiz designed to help Canadians determine their “inner animal” found that almost a quarter of respondents were caribou. The quiz, available at http://apps.facebook.com/wwf-ca-inner-animal/, matches respondents to an “inner animal” based on their answers five questions about character traits, including their “look,” where they prefer to live, and favourite foods.
“The caribou is quintessentially Canadian, so it’s fitting that the majority of us identify with this animal,” said Jeremy Marten, Director of Marketing at WWF-Canada. “I was also happy to see the tiger was a top five contender, given that this is the Year of the Tiger. We hope that Canadians enjoyed the quiz, and that it helped raise awareness of WWF’s important work protecting these species and their habitats.”
Out of almost 19,000 responses, the caribou led the pack at 4,040. In second place, 2,581 Canadians identified their “inner animal” as the grey wolf, followed by the Asian elephant at 2,440 and the walrus at 1,680. Of the 19 animals included in the survey, the meerkat was the least popular, with only 30 responses to date.
The “inner animal” options were selected from those available in WWF-Canada’s Symbolic Wildlife Adoption Program, which allows Canadians to symbolically adopt a species at risk and support critical work to protect habitats. Funds from the adoptions are used to fight major threats like climate change and animal poaching, and to support WWF’s conservation efforts across Canada.
