WWF-Canada joins World Oceans Day event on the Halifax Waterfront on June 5

World Oceans Day originated at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 when the Government of Canada proposed June 8 to be recognized as World Oceans Day. Seventeen years later, numerous countries worldwide use this day as an opportunity to celebrate our world oceans and raise awareness of the importance of protecting our oceans for future generations.

The theme of the event is “Our Oceans, Our Responsibility.”

Marine experts from WWF-Canada will be available to talk about the work we are doing to restore the health of our oceans, with special focus on a new campaign to establish a network of marine protected areas established in the Scotian Shelf and Bay of Fundy region (http://wwf.ca.oceansaction).

In the Atlantic, WWF-Canada focuses on:

• Rebuilding cod stocks on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland
• Marine habitat protection
• Sustainable fisheries
• Endangered species recovery
• The impact of climate change on the health of our oceans
