WWF-Canada disappointed by Government of New Brunswick’s newly drafted Water Strategy

Saint John, October 6, 2017 – In response to New Brunswick’s draft Water Strategy released today, World Wildlife Fund-Canada is urging the government to follow the lead of other provinces by considering a more comprehensive approach to water management. Our response:

Simon J. Mitchell, Senior Specialist, Freshwater at WWF-Canada says:

“The current draft Water Strategy is not sophisticated enough to address the cumulative effects that threats like climate change, pollution and habitat loss have on our watersheds today. An integrated and legislated approach is the only way to protect freshwater for aquatic ecosystems and human communities. New Brunswick is the last province in the country to develop a comprehensive approach to water management and we should embrace the opportunity to learn from legislation like the Water Sustainability Act in British Columbia. We look forward to continuing to participate in this consultation with the New Brunswick government and water stakeholders to make sure that our rivers and watersheds are protected well into the future.”
