Position Description

The Specialist, Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries, reports to and works closely with the Senior Specialist, Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries and collaborates with individuals from a wide range cross-functional WWF programs and functions. The position is integral to implementing WWF-Canada’s commitments under select federal government grants, namely the Canada Nature Fund grant to reduce fishing and ghost gear pressure on species at risk near the Gilbert Bay MPA; the Environmental Damages Fund grant to restore habitat in Parker’s Brook, in Newfoundland and Labrador, multiple Impact Assessment Agency of Canada grants to support participation in offshore oil and gas environmental assessments and to reduce and mitigate the impacts on the marine environment more generally. 
The Specialist, Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with indigenous partners, including the NunatuKavut Community Council, local communities, governments, academia, industry and other environmental non-governmental organizations and executing work plans in order to achieve ocean program goals.  Specifically, the Specialist is responsible for implementing conservation strategies to: mitigate fishing impacts on species at risk in the marine area adjacent to the Gilbert Bay MPA;  engage with relevant stakeholders, policy makers and local communities about protection and restoration and managing human activities within areas of high conservation value; work with appropriate provincial and federal government departments to strengthen environmental provisions related to oil and gas activities in Atlantic Canada; gather, analyze and disseminate information on complex marine conservation issues and provide reports, updates, briefings, presentations and recommendations to senior Oceans Program staff; supervise interns and oversee contracts.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement project commitments under select federal government grants (namely the Canada Nature Fund and Environmental Damages Fund grants) on time and within budget.
  • Engage in associate community outreach and coordination of project deliverables
  • Create and manage external contracts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with project partners, including the NunatuKavut Community Council and the Marine Institute and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
  • Provide guidance and written recommendations as WWF-Canada’s representative on oil and gas advisory and impact assessment committees 
  • Liaise with partners and indigenous groups to facilitate broader participation within oil and gas assessment processes.  
  • Build and maintain internal and external partnerships/relationships to support WWF objectives relating to protection, restoration and managing impacts of human activities in areas of high conservation value, through collaboration, coordination and enhanced communications, on Canada’s east coast.  

What We Are Looking For

  • Fisheries science and marine ecology background (Masters)
  • 4 to 6 years of relevant experience 
  • Strong project management skills 
  • Proven exceptional ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of partners from all walks of life (academia, governments, coastal communities and other NGOs) 
  • Understanding of the role of community benefits as a driver of conservation goals 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication 
  • Be passionately committed to the mission and 5 Year Plan of WWF-Canada and to its success in accomplishing these
