Position Description

The Specialist, Marine Conservation, delivers results for the “Food for All” campaign which acknowledges the vital role small fish such as herring, sand lance, capelin and mackerel play in feeding large predators such as cetaceans, seabirds, commercial and non-commercial fish species. It recognizes the important social and cultural values of forage fish for coastal communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather, analyze and disseminate information on complex marine conservation issues and provide reports, updates, briefings, presentations and recommendations to senior Oceans Program staff.
  • Conduct research and develop forage fish conservation strategies and projects for the Pacific region that draw from and contribute to WWF-Canada’s national forage fish initiative, with consideration of social, cultural and economic values.
  • Build strong partnerships with academia, policy makers, Indigenous peoples, environmental non-government organizations, industry and local communities to secure results.
  • Monitor relevant developments in priority areas such as the Salish Sea.
  • Support contract development, hiring of contractors and tracking of budget and milestones.
  • Coordinate events and workshops related to forage fish project implementation.

 

What We Are Looking For

  • Master’s degree in marine biology, environmental studies, resource management or other relevant fields combined with at least 4 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience on Canada’s Sustainable Fisheries Framework, policy, scientific, management issues and decision-making structures related to forage fish projects in Canada.
  • Strong commitment to WWF-Canada’s focus on demonstrating that it’s possible to build long-lasting conservation results which benefit communities. Experience in successfully executing community engagement initiatives would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of forage fish, species at risk and an ecosystem approach to fisheries management would be an asset.
  • Experience with the implementation of integrated coastal management would be an asset
  • Track record achieving results-based measurable outcomes.
  • Proven ability to work within a team environment with internal and external partners in a respectful, collaborative and effective manner.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving, creative, interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the capability to speak to a range of audiences internal and external.
  • Strong understanding of WWF-Canada’s mission and objectives and demonstrates passionate commitment to its success in accomplishing them.
