Position Description

The Specialist, Marine Conservation and Shipping will provide policy, science, industry perspective, and community and Indigenous engagement and outreach capacity on issues related to marine shipping and marine protection to the WWF Oceans program. By reviewing legislation, regulation, government policy, industry best practices, local community and Indigenous Knowledge, and international law, the candidate will provide accurate and detailed analysis in support of WWF-Canada’s marine shipping and marine conservation initiatives, and continue to build relationships with Indigenous communities, industry, government, civil society, and other experts and advocates. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work persistently and collaboratively across sectors (e.g. governments, Indigenous communities, civil society, coastal communities, academia, and marine industry stakeholders) to identify and build opportunities for collaboration and joint solution-finding.  
  • Provide in-depth research and analysis regarding shipping and marine conservation policies, practices, and related impacts. 
  • Represent WWF-Canada’s shipping and marine conservation interests at various conferences, meetings, advisory committees, workshops and forums, etc. as needed. 
  • Give advice to members of the Oceans teams and other WWF teams on strategy and policy direction based on research, Indigenous Knowledge and science. 
  • Identify external experts (when required), negotiate contracts and manage contract deliverables. 
 

What We Are Looking For

  • Marine Resource Management, Conservation Biology, Environmental Studies, or other relevant area of study, combined with at least 2 years of relevant experience. 
  • Knowledge of and work experience in the marine shipping sector, marine conservation, or from a community that is experiencing and navigating the challenges and opportunities of the global shipping sector and/or marine conservation. 
  • Previous experience providing policy and research support to an agency or multi-stakeholder setting, ideally related to marine shipping and conservation issues more generally. 
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners in project design, management and advocacy. 
  • Self-starter, able to work independently. 
  • Exceptional communication skills. 
 

Other Information

This is a 1-year contract position based in our Victoria office. There will be national and international travel as part of this role.
