​Position description

WWF-Canada seeks a dynamic and well-rounded Communications Specialist with strong writing skills, demonstrated media savvy and a strong strategic sensibility. The ideal candidate will be an experienced writer/editor with the ability to synthesize complex information into compelling narratives for various platforms and differing audiences. A background in journalism – particularly science or politics reporting – would be beneficial.
 
As a key member of our national Communications & Media team, the candidate will work closely with social media, video and other communications colleagues to deliver on a wide variety of communications objectives (such as but not limited to conservation, public engagement and fundraising). An energized individual who thrives in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment will be a good fit with our organization.

Major Responsibilities

As a communications specialist, you will be expected to:

  • Develop a strong, dynamic and integrated national conservation narrative for WWF-Canada and identify and leverage opportunities to position the organization’s voice and brand in the Canadian marketplace.
  • Develop and lead the execution of communication strategies, plans and activities in support of WWF-Canada’s conservation priorities, in consultation with conservation leads. This will include:
    • Developing key messages;
    • Planning and managing communication tactics leveraging a range of mediums (stories, photos, videos, blogs, infographics, reports, etc.) and channels (traditional media, social media, WWF communication properties, etc.);
    • Strategically identifying audiences and cultivating relationships with key communications influencers (reporters, bloggers, etc.).
  • Provide writing capacity and expertise (speeches, op-eds, web copy, blog entries, etc.)  to the communications and media team to support priority communications initiatives.
  • Provide expertise to fundraising marketing staff and act as a liaison for initiatives requiring conservation communications input.
  • Protect the WWF-Canada image and brand and provide capacity in crisis communications for all WWF-Canada programs.

What We’re Looking For

  • Post-secondary degree, preferably in the area of science communications, journalism, politics, English, professional writing or general communications.
  • At least four years’ experience in a journalism, communications or writing role with demonstrated skill and ability to manage complex scientific, political or technical content.
  • Proven ability to work within a collaborative team environment and as a consultant.
  • Ability to work with senior management and offices in different locations.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of sound project management.
  • Experience working in a conservation environment is an asset.

Other information

This role will be based out of our Toronto office and some national travel may be required for this position.
