Senior Specialist, Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries

Position Description

This role will contribute essential, evidence-based marine ecosystem knowledge to WWF-Canada, and lead at least one major initiative relating to oceans and/or fisheries.

The initial major initiative is building on our national forage fish assessment (see: http://awsassets.wwf.ca/downloads/food_for_all___small_fish_with_big_influence___wwf_forage_fish_report.pdf).  WWF-Canada is currently working together with a wide range of partners to advance the science and management of capelin, mackerel and herring stocks, their supporting habitat and ecosystems. We do so with an understanding that these species and their fisheries are ecologically, culturally and economically important to coastal communities across Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on science-based best practice for marine ecosystem management and identify high impact activities for strong conservation outcomes.
  • Oversee overall strategy development and implementation of WWF-Canada’s national forage fish initiative, a structurally complex initiative with multiple projects across the country
  • Deliver project plans with goals, strategies, budgets, partnership engagement and, importantly, project outcomes.
  • Strengthen the scientific basis for WWF’s forage fish initiative through review of scientific studies on related topics (e.g. predator-prey relationships and ecosystem-based fisheries management) and engagement with academic partners on collaborative research projects.
  • Coordinate effort with other projects in the Oceans and Arctic Programs and collaborate with individuals from WWF-Canada’s Communication and Development teams, among others.
  • Manage, contracts, develop funding proposals and participate in donor-related work
  • Supervise interns, volunteers and staff
  • Ad hoc assignments as requested by the Vice President and Lead Specialist Oceans.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Strong marine ecology background (PhD)
  • Ability to operate at high-level (including negotiation skills) in French and English
  • Strong problem-solving, creative interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach
  • Proven exceptional ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of partners from all walks of life (academia, governments, coastal communities and other NGOs)
  • Understanding of the role of community benefits as a driver of conservation goals
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in both French and English
  • Be passionately committed to the mission and 5 Year Plan of WWF-Canada and to its success in accomplishing these
