Position Description

The Senior Specialist, Freshwater will provide expert strategic guidance and advice to the WWF-Canada Vice President Freshwater, to ensure delivery on the organization’s freshwater conservation goals. The Senior Specialist, Freshwater will lead implementation of national, provincial, and territorial policy and regulatory goals of the initiatives within the Freshwater team.  Expert knowledge is required of the Canadian conservation context, the Canadian freshwater organizational landscape to ensure connectivity between organizational goals and programmatic shared goals within WWF-Canada.  A deep understanding of regulatory and legislative process to aid government relations and recommendations to further freshwater health in the country as well as the ability to deliver strong relationship and partnerships across stakeholders is required. This role will require representation of  WWF-Canada in external partnerships and national and international forums as agreed with the VP, Freshwater.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies for and lead implementation of selected WWF-Canada freshwater regional and national conservation priorities consistent with WWF-Canada’s 5-year plan. 
  • Provide freshwater expertise, analysis and strategic advice to colleagues and external players related to WWF-Canada’s freshwater priorities.
  • Add capacity to WWF-Canada’s national freshwater work, including building and maintaining strong relationships with Indigenous leaders and communities, municipal, provincial, territorial and national governments, the academic community and other environmental non-governmental organizations.
  • Provide input into the overall strategic direction of WWF-Canada’s Freshwater program in collaboration with colleagues across WWF’s national conservation teams.
  • Participate in the development of work plans and annual plans including identifying opportunities for program improvement.
  • Promote WWF-Canada’s conservation interests in development plans, policies, and regulations to external stakeholders.

 What We Are Looking For

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field plus at least 7-10 years of related experience – Considered to be a fully qualified professional with expert knowledge.
  • Deep knowledge of freshwater management and protection and ecosystem concepts.
  • Knowledge of freshwater regulation and policy provincially and federally.
  • Track record achieving results-based measurable outcomes.
  • Proven experience of effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary team as well as with multi-stakeholder groups, nationally and regionally.
  • Ability to build respect and trust in communities and successful partnerships.
  • Understanding of best practice for progressing on national and international conservation goals through regional and multi-stakeholder engagement.
  • Able to contribute meaningfully as a member of advisory or working group, as needed.
  • Strong problem-solving, creative interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, deliver-oriented approach.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project management and execution skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain results-orientated relationships and partnerships internally and externally.

 Other Information
This role may be based out of any of our WWF-Canada offices and will require travel nationally.
