Senior Manager, Communications (WWF Arctic Programme)

Position Description

The Senior Manager, Communications is tasked to lead strategic communications activities within the WWF Arctic Programme, provide leadership for Arctic communications within the wider WWF Network, and coordinate WWF Arctic Programme communications with aspects of the WWF network, and with external partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Arctic-wide strategic communications planning to support the implementation of the circumpolar Arctic Strategic Plan to maximize opportunities for collaboration while reducing overlap.
  • Coordinate network-wide Arctic messaging and monitor Arctic related positions to ensure a cohesive WWF voice and minimize the potential for reputation damage.
  • Create and update communications materials – fact sheets, presentations, maps and other materials as necessary to help disseminate WWF Arctic messages.
  • Coordinate and lead Arctic Communication working groups bringing together communicators from Arctic programme offices and other parts of the WWF Network.
  • Develop the annual strategy for social/traditional media opportunities, and identify opportunistic media hooks.
  • Ensure production of The Circle, a highly regarded quarterly journal informing ~4,000 decision-makers, scientists and the interested public about Arctic environmental and development issues related to WWF’s Arctic Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure that WWF leaders have necessary information and materials for high level communications on Arctic issues.
  • Liaise with Network Practices and other WWF internal audiences to provide communications support on issues relevant to the Arctic, like polar bear and whale conservation (Wildlife), Arctic fisheries, offshore oil and gas, and MPAs (Oceans), Arctic policy and governance (Governance) and Arctic climate impacts (Climate and Energy).
  • Ensure the network has a clear point of contact for Arctic communications questions, photo/video/story requests, and other information requests.
  • Support the coordinating team, national offices and Arctic Steering Committee to maintain and heighten WWF’s unique profile with the international Arctic community by organizing and presenting at Arctic events, and managing our presence at international conferences.

What We Are Looking For

  • A degree in communications, journalism or a related field
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience in communications with a demonstrated understanding of a variety of communications environments and skills is preferred
  • Familiarity with and an interest in environmental and nature conservation issues, and with WWF’s vision and goals
  • An excellent command of English (both written and oral)
  • Has excellent oral and written presentation and communication skills, and ability to translate technical and scientific information for a non-technical audience.
  • A strong competence in social media
  • A good understanding of the Arctic circumpolar communications and political environment
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically about communication
  • Familiarity with work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Is passionately committed to the mission and objectives of WWF and to its success in accomplishing these
  • Is a proactive, self-motivating person, who works within the team but demonstrates autonomy and is not shy to ask for information or advice
  • Generates ideas, is solutions-oriented, constructive in debates, well-organized, passionate, and is inspirational to others

Other Information

This is a 2-year contract position that may require international travel as part of the role.  This role will be based out of our Ottawa office.
