Earth Hour and the People’s Orb
The highlight for me came at the end, when WWF Director General James Leape and 10-year-old Anne-Katrine Bisgaard Håkansson from Denmark presented The People’s Orb to Vijay Nambiar, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Chief of Staff.
The People’s Orb is a shimmering globe containing a 350-gigabyte mosaic of the hopes, dreams and experiences of people from every continent of the world. This WWF initiative pulled together major climate campaigns in the world – Raise Your Voice, Seal the Deal, Tck Tck Tck, 350.org, Hopenhagen and WWF’s own Vote Earth. The People’s Orb will stay on the table for the rest of the negotiations.
It’s an inspiring reminder of the millions upon millions of people who support action in Copenhagen, because they believe in what we can achieve if we act together. As UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon reminded us, “Climate change may be bigger than each of us but it is not bigger than all of us.”
I couldn’t say it any better.
