Position Description
The Director, Communications and Media leads a high-performance team to help achieve powerful conservation goals to reverse the decline of wildlife. The role requires exceptionally strong proven communications skills, bringing imagination, professionalism and clarity to communicating in ways that inspire change.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Conservation and Chief Conservation Officer, the Director, Communications and Media leads specialized teams for advance planning to maintain progress towards WWF-Canada’s priorities while providing rapid response to time-sensitive emerging issues. Conservation is the business of WWF-Canada and this role requires working in tandem with our Conservation team and closely with our Development team to ensure overall message consistency across all WWF-Canada divisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Articulate, promote and build massive support for transformative conservation goals.
- Direct the communications, digital and social media teams to enable the development of integrated, external communications campaigns and activities designed to engage audience segments and produce measurable actions and outcomes.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy including email, earned media, social media, websites, in-house print publications, paid media and any other necessary communication tools and techniques to advance the goals and objectives of WWF-Canada’s Strategic Plan.
- Determine and deliver same day response to emerging conservation issues requiring immediate comment.
- Design, develop and implement innovative communications strategies in consultation with all major divisions of WWF-Canada to deliver conservation outcomes, increase public awareness and grow supporters’ action.
- Develop and lead effective delivery of conservation narrative and lead a culture of inspired storytelling at WWF-Canada.
- Identify opportunities for WWF-Canada leadership to provide expert commentary.
- Support WWF-Canada President and CEO and other WWF-Canada leaders with key messaging, speaking notes and speeches, as required.
- Oversee and integrate marketing and promotional messages
- Ensure marketing and promotional messages are accurate and in-line with overall conservation messaging.
- Ensure compliance with WWF’s Brand Guidelines and core messaging for all WWF-Canada communications, fundraising, public relations and promotional activities, and advise on risk management, as needed.
- Establish benchmarks and reporting mechanisms for communications and media goals and audience growth.
- Manage and prepare budgets, financial reports and forecasts.
- Develop the capacity of managers and specialists through effective performance management including the development of individual work plans and motivate the achievement of results consistent with agreed objectives.
- Engage within the WWF International Network to ensure leading edge strategies are shared and learning opportunities are leveraged.
What We Are Looking For
- 10-12 years of progressive experience in Communications and Media including digital marketing and social media, journalism, public relations and marketing experience
- Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
- 5+ years of experience leading a high-performing team of direct reports that include meeting deadlines and ensuring quality control.
- Strong track record of media placement across all platforms including on-line and traditional media and an extensive current network of news media influencers.
- Post-secondary degree in Communications, Journalism or related fields or comparable work experience.
- Proven experience developing messages on complex issues to support media outreach
- Proven ability to set priorities, complete work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines.
- Proven exceptional ability to work collaboratively with others on major communications outcomes.
- Experience in the practice of project management.
- Proven negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Experience developing communications for diverse communities preferred.
- Bilingual English/French is an asset.
