Communities across Canada gather to celebrate Earth Hour
Led by WWF (World Wildlife Fund), Earth Hour is a global lights out phenomenon to demonstrate that individual action is important and adds up to make a big difference. To date, a record 2,000 cities and towns in 85 countries have committed to turn off their lights on March 28 at 8:30 p.m. But as much as Earth Hour is a global event, it is also one for the community.
In a recent survey, over 80 per cent (81%) of Canadians say they will turn off their lights for Earth Hour.
More than one third (36%) of Canadians reported having seen changes in their part of the country that they thought were definitely or likely the result of climate change. And they are split as to the effectiveness of our efforts to combat it. Forty-four percent are not confident that we can find a solution to climate change before it’s too late, while 52 per cent believe we can.
“The hundreds of community Earth Hour events happening in cities all across Canada shows that Canadians see climate change as an urgent issue and that Canadians want to be part of the solution,” says Gerald Butts, President and CEO, WWF-Canada. “I encourage everyone to make their voice heard by participating in an Earth Hour event, or by planning their own.”
