Boreal Forest: Our Economy, Recreation and Future
The boreal forest is located just north of Montréal, Québec City and the Mauricie, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, and the North-Shore, stretching to the Gaspé Peninsula. Representing 70% of the forested area in Québec, the boreal forest covers more than 550,000 km2. It drives the economy for a number of regions, generating wealth, natural resources and jobs. It is one of the few remaining virgin forests on the planet. We have the responsibility of ensuring its survival and preserving this valuable natural heritage.
The web site provides information, statistics, maps, facts, references and news on issues related to the boreal forest. It also provides a simple way to empower citizens by enabling them to ask candidates and parties to publicly state their position and make specific commitments.
Protecting the boreal forest does not mean putting it under a glass dome. It is possible to preserve biodiversity and maintain the ecological processes while promoting the sustainable use of this resource. Setting up a protected area network representing Quebec’s biodiversity is one way to ensure the future of the boreal forest. In order to preserve a quality natural heritage for current and future generations, we must act while there is still time.
