Blackout Day – August 14, 2008
Everyone was out walking and checking out the neighbourhood, so they came together and an informal party evolved over the course of the night! Every year since, they have come together to celebrate Blackout Day by turning off their lights, unplugging their appliances and meeting outside. Sheryl and her sister Caroline have taken the concept further and created the Blackout Day Challenge, which invites individuals, communities and municipalities to participate by powering down for the day. You can check out the website at www.blackoutday.ca
As I’m involved with outreach for WWF-Canada, Sheryl and Caroline were kind enough to invite me to their festivities, which happened this past weekend (they always hold the Blackout day party on the closest weekend day to accommodate everyone’s schedules). Although it was raining cats and dogs all night, that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits! One neighbour had a big tent and we all sat comfortably under it, snacking on the pot luck feast, enjoying great conversation and many laughs. It was so wonderful to be a part of a positive movement that is happening from the ground up, and both Sheryl and Caroline have worked tirelessly to create a fun, engaging challenge that everyone can make their own and make a difference. You can see some of the pictures from that night below.
Tomorrow is the official Blackout Day where Caroline and Sheryl have a busy day in Woodstock. They want you to join in the celebration and create your own Blackout Day fun wherever you are! Turn out the lights, don’t use the stove, unplug your appliances and get outside with your friends! And if you want to make every day Blackout Day, sign up for The Good Life and make it count!
