Associate Specialist, Species Conservation
Job Description
WWF-Canada seeks an energetic and self-driven Associate Specialist, Conservation Research to join our Science, Research and Innovation (SRI) team. Reporting to the Senior Specialist, Species Conservation, the Associate Specialist will support the organization by providing scientific research, data management, and natural history expertise. This role provides vital research and expert wildlife knowledge to ensure WWF’s conservation advocacy and actions are based on strong conservation science. The Associate Specialist will help develop, rigorous, scientific conservation metrics to track and report on the impact of WWF-Canada’s conservation efforts across the organization. It is also responsible for helping to identify locations of priority “blue carbon” (i.e., coastal vegetated habitat) sinks in Canada and assist with the development of recommendations for implementing nature-based solutions in these regions.
This role also involves working closely with colleagues across the organization — including our Communications, Development, and Community Giving teams — to ensure all our external facing products maintain the highest credibility and scientific accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
• Conducting research and data collection by assessing, compiling, and cataloguing baseline and spatial, biological, environmental, and traditional knowledge information.
• Developing, rigorous, scientific conservation metrics to support WWF’s priority programs by tracking progress towards goals and targets and reporting on impact.
• Delivering high-quality research and analytical products within project deadlines.
• Provide conservation science and natural history expertise to ensure WWF’s species
communications products are always scientifically accurate.
• Ensuring an efficient and effective process for conservation team review of marketing, communications, and fundraising materials, including images, video, and written content.
Requirements
• Master’s degree in zoology, biology, ecology, or similar field plus at least 1-year related experience (or Bachelor’s degree plus 2-3 years of relevant work experience).
• Strong natural history knowledge and ability to identify Canada’s wildlife species, particularly species at risk.
• Knowledge of biodiversity and conservation issues in Canada
• Strong database management skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Office.
• Experience gathering research and data from various government and academic sources.
• Ability to work collaboratively in multi-person teams.
• Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
• Excellent ability to multi-task and manage multiple competing priorities.
• Strong problem-solving and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach.
• Bilingual considered an asset.

This role can be based out of any of WWF-Canada offices – Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax, Victoria, St. John’s, or Iqaluit
