Senior Specialist, BC Central Interior
Overview
The Senior Specialist, BC Central Interior will create, grow, and maintain regional partnerships with Indigenous and local communities, mining and forestry sectors, and non-governmental organizations, among others. This role will facilitate, drive, and coordinate WWF-Canada’s efforts across all Conservation units throughout the BC Central Interior. Due to its ecology, culture and high climate vulnerability, the BC Central Interior is a priority for collaborative conservation outcomes that restore and steward biodiversity and increase and maintain storage capacity for carbon in nature.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an overview and understanding of priority issues impacting nature in the BC Central Interior.
- Collaborate with Indigenous communities in the region to ensure all of WWF-Canada’s efforts are consistent with Indigenous priorities, knowledge, governance structures and rights.
- Build strategic partnerships with other organizations that could contribute to conservation initiatives in the region, such as academic partners, environmental NGOs, and industry.
- Develop, facilitate and lead community engagement and working partnerships in the region.
- Assist WWF-Canada with tracking and reporting on progress in the region.
- Support a two-eyed seeing approach, guided by Indigenous knowledge and priorities with western science woven in.
- Participate and/or lead in the development of project goals, work plans, as well as project budgets and annual budgets.
- Work with conservation leadership to ensure communications and fundraising activities are consistent with the priorities of First Nations and communities in the region.
- Contribute expertise to conservation support activities such as fundraising and communications.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of BC’s Central Interior including its ecology, First Nations, industrial threats and governance systems.
- 6+ years of relevant professional experience, for example, working for Indigenous governments or organizations, or community-based organizations within the BC Central Interior.
- Related post-secondary education OR an additional 2+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Ability to build respect, trust and partnerships with Indigenous peoples, businesses, other communities and external partners by understanding their priorities and role as key drivers behind achieving and benefiting from conservation outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of collaborative conservation approaches and the complexities of building and maintaining positive working relationships within a region over time.
- Proven skills in strategic partnership building and planning, and a track record of achieving results-based measurable outcomes.
- Exceptionally strong facilitation skills.
- Project management experience with developing project objectives, managing the project budget, and delegating tasks.
- Strong problem-solving, conflict-resolution, creative, and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Indigenous language skills are an asset – Secwepemctsin preferred.
- Familiarity with data sovereignty guidelines are an asset.
- Knowledge of regional forest ecology and restoration and/or mining issues is an asset.
- Demonstrated understanding of WWF-Canada’s mission and objectives to Regenerate Canada, and a demonstrated passionate commitment to its success in accomplishing them.

Other Information
- This role will require local travel to meet with partners, attend meetings, etc.
- Occasional national safe travel will be required. Safe travel will be determined by following International, Federal, Territorial, and Provincial requirements and following consultation with local and Indigenous communities where applicable.
