Whistler, BC
The resort municipality of Whistler will be a black oasis for Earth Hour this year. The resort will be going completely dark, powering down, and holding their first ever bike powered concert in Whistler Olympic Plaza. Participating restaurants will also be offering candlelit dinner.
Banff, Alberta
Banff National Park will be shutting off the lights along the palatial 100 and 200 block of Banff Avenue. In coordination with Parks Canada, Mayor Karen Sorensen will do the ceremonial honours and switch off the lights at 8:30 pm.
Guelph, Ontario
Now entering their fourth year of Earth Hour involvement, Guelph will be hosting a lights out relay between 12-7pm on March 26th. The town’s community energy initiative inspired the event in which citizens will have the chance to walk or run 60 km through the city in to encourage people to go dark for the hour.
Kingston, Ontario
Kingston residents can celebrate Earth Hour this year by heading to Springer Market Square for the fourth annual kingston unplugged – a 3 hour, off-the-grid concert with The Gertudes. This event will be powered by renewable energy sources. The city of Kingston and Sustainable Kingston have teamed up with this volunteer led event in support of Earth Hour and climate change. If you need some incentive to go, the first 1000 people will receive free beeswax candles.
Taking action, big or small, on climate change matters. These Earth Hour events highlight just some of the meaningful ways cities and towns across the country are involving their citizens and promoting sustainability initiatives along the way.
