Did you know, tortoises and turtles are among the oldest of all living reptiles, evolving very little in the 200 million years they have lived on the planet? October 21st is Reptile Awareness Day, so what better time would there be to celebrate some of our favourite reptiles, Asian turtles.

There are around 89 species of Asian tortoises and turtles, all of which are threatened. The different species vary in size, with the largest being the Burmese mountain tortoise (also known as the Asian brown tortoise). It reaches up to 60 cm in length and weighs between 20-37 kg.

What do they eat?

These reptiles move too slowly to pursue active prey. Tortoises are mostly herbivores, although some species will also eat carrion (dead or decaying meat). They usually feed on grass, weeds, leafy greens, flowers, and some fruits. Freshwater turtles eat insects and aquatic larvae, crustaceans and aquatic vegetation.

What are their main threats?

They are the most sought after in the illegal wildlife trade, but are also threatened by hunting and habitat loss and degradation.

What is WWF doing?

WWF works to protect tortoises and turtles to ensure they do not become extinct. These measures include:

  • Working with governments and regulatory authorities to ensure more effective enforcement of laws and regulations
  • Helping to set up and improve protected areas for endangered species
  • Raising public awareness of the plight of turtles and tortoises
  • Assisting in the collection of more reliable data on turtle and tortoise trade and its impact on populations
