WWF Responds to Resolute FSC Certificate Suspensions – December 12, 2013
This week FSC announced the suspension of specific Resolute Forest Products FSC certificates in Ontario and Quebec. WWF’s statement in response to this action is as follows:
WWF’s partnership with Resolute is focused on their Climate Savers commitment to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by 65% below 2000 levels by 2015, which includes the goal of achieving 80% FSC certification by 2015. We believe FSC is the gold standard in forest management due to its rigorous social and environmental standards, protecting wildlife habitat and supporting local communities. The suspension of Resolute’s certificates is a disappointing setback in recent progress for boreal forest certification in Canada. We continue to support the FSC process as well as Resolute’s significant FSC commitment. Our hope is that all parties will work together to find solutions for reinstating these certificates within the next 12 months, so that progress can continue in conserving Canada’s boreal forests.
