WWF disappointed by Canada’s withdrawal from Kyoto Accord

WWF-Canada today expressed disappointment in the announcement from federal Environment Minister Peter Kent that Canada will withdraw from the Kyoto Accord.

“Minister Kent has called climate change an urgent issue in need of urgent action,” said Josh Laughren, Director, Climate and Energy for WWF-Canada. “A binding international agreement offers our best and perhaps only hope to act quickly enough to avoid the worst effects of climate change. But any legally binding agreement is only as good as a country’s good faith commitment. As Canada withdraws from international action, the world will now be waiting to see what Canada does domestically to raise its ambition in line with what the Minister himself has said is needed”

Canada has perhaps the best renewable energy potential in the world, terrific manufacturing know-how, and leading edge experience in solutions like a carbon tax (BC), Feed-in-Tariffs (ON), hydropower expertise (QC), and technology innovation (AB) that must be harnessed to tackle climate change and lower emissions.

WWF will continue to support a global agreement to tackle climate change, to work with all levels of government to implement solutions, and will continue to hold Canada to account for its domestic and global commitments.
