WWF congratulates Environment Canada on significant wildlife trafficking conviction
TORONTO, ONTARIO—WWF-Canada congratulates Environment Canada’s Wildlife Enforcement Directorate for the successful investigation and prosecution of a significant case of illegal wildlife trade of narwhal tusks to the United States.
“Most conservation results are achieved through legislation: by laws that create parks and protected areas, or that protect species from over-harvest. But these laws are meaningless if not supported by effective enforcement. WWF and TRAFFIC have long recognized and supported the critical role that enforcement plays in wildlife conservation around the world. Canada is fortunate to have very dedicated, professional officers working to combat illegal wildlife trade.
I hope this considerable penalty will deter other individuals from engaging in similar illegal wildlife trade activities.”
– Ernie Cooper, Director, TRAFFIC and Wildlife Trade, WWF-Canada
