WWF-Canada announces new board members

Toronto, 15 December 2014 – WWF-Canada is pleased to announce four new board members from across the country. Anne Giardini, Tom Heintzman, Lloyd Bryant and John Fitzpatrick are primed to join WWF-Canada’s efforts in safeguarding Canada’s true wealth: nature. 

“Our new board members bring leadership and experience to ensure WWF-Canada continues to be a leader in finding solutions that allow nature to thrive while communities prosper,” said WWF-Canada President, David Miller.

Anne Giardini is the Chancellor of Simon Fraser University and a current or past member of several boards including Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc., Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc., the Forest Products Association of Canada, Council of Forest Industries, the Alberta Forest Products Association, PEN Canada, the Vancouver Writers Fest, the Writers Trust of Canada, and the Board of Governors of Simon Fraser University. From 2008 to June 2014 she served as the Canadian President of Weyerhaeuser, an international forest products company. Previously, she served for many years as Weyerhaeuser’s Canadian General Counsel.  

In 2014, Anne was recognized by WXN’s as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women, and by Vancouver Magazine as one of its Vancouver Power 50. In 2013-14, she served on the Government of Canada’s Advisory Council for Promoting Women on Boards. In 2013, she received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and a Lexpert Zenith Award. In 2011, Anne received the Robert V. A. Jones Award, recognizing leadership in corporate counsel practice and exceptional contributions to the Corporate Counsel bar or community, and was named one of Canada’s 25 most influential lawyers.

She holds a BA from SFU (Economics), LLB from UBC, and LLM from Cambridge University (Trinity Hall).

Tom Heintzman is Managing Director, Infrastructure Group at JCM Capital, where he is responsible for JCM’s investing in construction and operation of Solar PV generation projects in select countries in Africa and Latin America. 

Previously, Tom co-founded Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, in 2004 with Greg Kiessling. After stepping down in 2013, he remains an investor in the company, which has operations in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, with almost 10,000 customers. 

Prior to founding Bullfrog Power, Tom spent more than 13 years in the private and NGO sectors, most recently with Zenon Environmental where he led global mergers and acquisitions initiatives as their Director of Corporate Development.
 
Earlier in his career, as Engagement Manager with McKinsey & Company, Tom provided consulting services to many of the world’s largest corporations in the energy, manufacturing, financial services and telecommunications sectors. 

From 1996 to 1998, Tom was instrumental in establishing Ecojustice Canada’s (formerly Sierra Legal Defence Fund) Ontario office, where he led several precedent-setting litigation, public advocacy and lobbying campaigns associated with the environmental consequences of the oil refining, mining, forestry, fishing and automobile industries. He also served on the board of the Sierra Legal Defence Fund from 1999 through 2004, and provided pro-bono consulting services to the Nature Conservancy of Canada during his tenure at McKinsey.
  
Lloyd Bryant is the Vice-President and General Manager, Printing and Personal Systems, and Managing Director for HP Canada.  Lloyd has overall responsibility for all aspects of HP’s Printing and Personal Systems business as well as being responsible for HP Canada’s environmental programs. In addition, as Managing Director, he is responsible for coordinating business strategies and representing HP’s entire business portfolio with government leaders, influencers and key partners in the country.  

During his 27 years with HP, he has held progressively senior positions in sales, alliance management, channel development, and general management. Prior to taking on his current role, Lloyd led HP Canada’s Imaging and Printing business.  He has also held senior roles leading HP Canada’s Enterprise Organization as well as successfully integrating COMPAQ’s PC division into HP.  Between 2002 and 2004, Lloyd led HP Canada’s Personal Systems Group to the market leading position it still enjoys today. From 1989 to 1993 Lloyd founded and was President of CCD Technology Inc., a specialty systems integrator focused on the Canadian Defense and Aerospace industry. 

Lloyd also oversees HP Canada’s environmental programs, including end-of-life compliance, strategy and sponsorships.  Lloyd is Chair of the board of directors of Electronics Products Stewardship Canada (EPSC) and Electronics Products Recycling Association (EPRA). These are not-for-profit organizations which work to design, promote, harmonize and implement sustainable programs to manage Canada’s used electronic equipment.  In 2012, Lloyd was named as one of Canada’s Clean 16 individuals who have had the most impact in their contributions to clean capitalism.  

Additionally, Lloyd serves on the board of directors of the RCMP Foundation and is Vice Chair of the board of directors of The Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC).  

John Fitzpatrick is a partner at BoyneClarke LLP in Halifax. He is a past member of the firm’s executive committee and is Team Leader for the Creditor Practice Group.  John is included in “Best Lawyers in Canada”.
John is also the current Chair of the Board of Governors for Saint Mary’s University, Director of the Halifax international Airport Authority, and he has been a member of WWF-Canada’s Atlantic Council since 2011. 
John has been a committed volunteer for a number of community and professional organizations and in recognition of his volunteerism, he has received the Canada 125 Medal, Peter Gzowski Award, Canadian Bar Association Community Service Award (Nova Scotia) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. John is also the recipient of the 2014 Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service.

John was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and received his Bachelor of Arts from Saint Mary’s University in 1981 and his Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1984. John was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1985, and was appointed Queens Counsel in 2008.
