WWF applauds progressive steps by Alberta’s government on climate change
TORONTO, November 23, 2015 – On November 22 the Government of Alberta proposed a new climate change strategy that included a tax on carbon, a cap on oil sands emissions, a phasing out of coal-fired electricity and an emphasis on renewable energy.
The strategy came the day before a meeting of premiers with the prime minister to discuss action on climate change in advance of the UN Conference of the Parties meeting in Paris in December.
Climate change is the most significant threat facing species and habitats and WWF has been calling for actions that keep global temperature changes within two degrees Celsius. The following is a statement from WWF-Canada President and CEO David Miller:
“WWF Canada is pleased to see the progressive steps proposed by Alberta’s climate change advisory panel. This new leadership produces a realistic strategy, including a meaningful carbon tax, to begin to address the high carbon emissions from an oil and gas producing province. Its proposed efforts to end the reliance on coal and switch to renewables are also noteworthy.
WWF-Canada recognizes that the world needs to move to one hundred percent renewables by 2050 if global climate goals are to be met. Alberta’s proposals are a strong step in the right direction, and an important signal that Canada is now serious about addressing climate change head on.”
