Specialist, Marine Shipping and Conservation

Position Description

The Specialist, Marine Shipping and Conservation will provide policy, science, industry perspective, and community and Indigenous engagement and outreach capacity on issues related to marine shipping and protection to the WWF Canadian Arctic and Oceans programs. By reviewing environmental assessments, legislation, regulation, government policy, industry best practices, local community and Indigenous Knowledge, and international law, the candidate will provide accurate and detailed analysis in support of WWF-Canada’s marine shipping and conservation initiatives, and continue to build relationships with Indigenous communities, industry, government, and other experts and advocates.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage and partner with Indigenous and local communities on marine shipping and conservation priorities, contributing to improved ocean protection and benefits to community wellbeing.  
  • Provide marine shipping and conservation input into WWF submissions to regulators, the International Maritime Organization, Arctic Council and assessments of resource projects.
  • Work persistently and collaboratively with the marine sector, to identify opportunities and advocate for high environmental and safety standards.  
  • Research companies, shipping operators, and marine sector stakeholders to identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Represent WWF-Canada’s marine shipping and conservation initiatives at various conferences, meetings, workshops and forums, etc. as needed.  
  • Proactively monitor marine shipping and conservation news and developments.
  • Contribute, collaborate, and draw expertise from WWF’s international team of conservation and policy experts. 
  • Give advice to all members of the Arctic and Oceans teams on strategy and policy direction based on research, Indigenous Knowledge and science.
  • Identify external experts (when required), negotiate contracts and manage deliverables.
  • Participate in the development of strategic plans for the Arctic program and on occasionally contribute to the development of funding proposals.
  • Design methodologically sound project work plans.
  • Provide briefing notes on key marine shipping and conservation issues.
  • Prepare written materials (blogs, fact sheets, web texts, reports) for public distribution as needed.

What We Are Looking For

  • Marine Resource Management, Conservation Biology, Environmental Studies, or other relevant area of study, combined with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of and work experience in the marine shipping sector or a related field, or from a community that is experiencing and navigating the challenges and opportunities of the global shipping sector. 
  • Previous experience providing policy and research support to an agency or multi-stakeholder setting, ideally related to marine shipping and conservation issues more generally.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners and Indigenous and local communities in project design, management and advocacy.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently.
  • Familiarity with spatial analysis and GIS software is an asset.

Other Information

There will be national and international travel as part of this role.
