Senior Specialist, Arctic Fisheries
Position Description
In the face of a changing climate and unsustainable development pressures, WWF-Canada is committed to supporting healthy Arctic ecosystems and the communities and species that depend on them. WWF-Canada’s Arctic Program aims to demonstrate that it is possible to have healthy robust ecosystems that go hand-in-hand with sustainable communities and economic well-being. A major goal of the program is to have sustainable fish stocks linked to Arctic community fisheries marketing their catch. WWF-Canada acknowledges the right of indigenous peoples of the Arctic to sustainably harvest marine and terrestrial species.
Reporting to the Vice President, Arctic Program, this role will help expand WWF-Canada’s work on Fisheries management in the Arctic, ensuring that our work is scientifically sound, incorporates traditional knowledge and is supportive of the aspirations of affected communities.
Key Responsibilities
Conservation Planning
- Work in collaboration with a wide array of stakeholders to develop small scale, community based, inshore Arctic fisheries.
- Provide advice on project design and implementation to ensure that projects are methodologically sound, use the best available science, and incorporate traditional knowledge.
- Identify and apply research and recommendations that promote good policy framework and governance, as well as community based management of Arctic fisheries.
- Provide policy guidance to secure best practices habitat conservation for large-scale commercial fisheries in Arctic Canada.
Communications
- Ensure that WWF-Canada’s relevant positions, views, and achievements are effectively and accurately communicated to key stakeholders.
- In consultation with the Arctic Vice President and communications staff, prepare written materials (blogs, fact sheets, web texts, reports) for public distribution as needed.
- Ensure that information, news and viewpoints from agencies in the region are effectively communicated to WWF-Canada team members.
- Represent WWF-Canada at meetings, conferences, workshops, and similar activities when requested by the Vice President, Arctic.
Support Scientific and Traditional Knowledge
- Maintain links with scientific, conservation and governmental bodies on issues related to Arctic Fisheries to ensure synergies and partnerships where appropriate.
- Engage with communities and agencies that provide local and traditional knowledge relevant to Arctic Fisheries and management.
- Remain abreast of developments relating to scientific and traditional knowledge related to Arctic Fisheries and management, and shares this information with colleagues.
What We Are Looking For:
- Completion of a Master degree (or equivalent) in the field of marine studies, biological sciences, conservation biology, or other relevant field of study.
- 5-8 years of relevant experience relating to fisheries resource management and/or 3-5 years of relevant experience relating to working in Nunavut communities.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners in project design and management.
- Proven experience of effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams as well as with multi-stakeholder groups, nationally and regionally.
- Strong problem-solving, creative interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong program management and execution skills.
- Ability to build and maintain results-oriented relationships and partnerships internally and externally.
- Be passionately committed to the mission and objectives of WWF-Canada and to its success in accomplishing these.
Other Information
This is a full-time permanent position that may require travel. While we are flexible in where this position will be stationed, Iqaluit is the preferred working location.
