Santa to PM Harper: It’s Hot Up Here!

The recently released proposal for a Clean Air Act, intensity-based controls which would allow emissions to increase until at least 2025, and the cold-shoulder to the Kyoto Protocol, are firmly on the “naughty” side of Santa’s list.

“This is a busy time of year for Santa and he tends to keep his nose out of politics, so there must really be a serious problem up north if he’s coming to Ottawa to deliver a warning instead of presents,” said Lorne Johnson, WWF-Canada.

Canada’s Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on the planet with a temperature increase of 3 to 4° C above normal. Weather conditions are unpredictable, nearly one million square kilometres of the icecap have melted, and the trend is accelerating. This serious loss of habitat and stability is putting seals, polar bears, and entire Arctic communities at risk.

Santa’s jolly “ho, ho, ho” was replaced with an irate “hot, hot, hot” as he warned the Prime Minister that his government members could very well get coal in their stockings this year for Christmas unless they start showing some leadership on global warming.
