Europe Envy III

A notable aspect is that it will set annual reduction requirements to ensure emissions are ratcheted down fast enough to avoid dangerous climate change, not just left to so me far-away date.  For details see http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2008/10/27131648

WWF Scotland worked with Stop Climate Chaos Scotland on a very effective public campaign to get this law. They generated almost 20,000 letters to the Scottish Government, including some from people outside the country which reminded the government that they are operating on a global stage where they can demonstrate leadership.

In contrast, a Canadian law which the Opposition parties ensured had strong mid-term and long-term targets died when the election was called. Canada’s short-term emission reduction obligations under the Kyoto Protocol are being ignored as is the Private Members Bill that requires the government to produce a plan to meet Kyoto.
