ESRF Funding Awarded
The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) currently lists 456 species as being nationally “at risk”.
The 2004 ESRF was funded generously by individuals, foundations and the corporate sector. Our corporate supporters include Alcan Inc., Duke Energy, Inco Limited, Noranda/Falconbridge Limited, Oracle Corporation, and Placer Dome Canada, Scotiabank and Sun Life Financial. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources also provided a generous contribution and Environment Canada matched the funds amounting to over $750,000 raised by WWF-Canada through the generosity of these donors. The funds went to various species recovery projects across Canada. Recovery efforts focussed on everything from jumping slugs and butterflies to rattlesnakes and grizzly bears.
Among the 56 projects receiving funds in 2004 are Trent University’s study of the reproduction biology and habitat use of the North Atlantic right whale, the Labrador Inuit Association’s study of the occurrence and distribution of wolverines in northern Labrador, Nature Saskatchewan’s Operation burrowing owl, the Haida Tribal Society’s northern abalone recovery work, Dalhousie University’s identification of mechanisms of non-recovery in the Atlantic cod, Operation Migration’s reintroduction of a discrete migratory population of whooping cranes into eastern North America, as well as several projects focussing on the recovery of woodland caribou.
Launched in 1988 by WWF-Canada and Environment Canada, the ESRF has invested over $7.8 million in more than 420 projects across Canada. For a full list of the 2004 ESRF projects, please visit our website wwf.ca.
