Coordinator, Arctic Community Engagement (Aklavlik)

Position description:

WWF-Canada seeks an energetic and self-driven Coordinator, Arctic Community Engagement with a passion for the Arctic Environment and an interest and experience in ecological, social, and/or cultural research. The Coordinator will provide support on the following:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating “Clean Camps, Clean Coast” project: working closely with local agencies, contractors and volunteers to coordinate a camp and coastline clean-up in two Inuvialuit communities.
  • Community-based Mapping, Research, and Data Collection: Assess, compile, and catalogue relevant baseline and spatial social, economic, cultural, environmental, traditional knowledge information.
  • Event Planning and Administration: Organize and participate in and document presentations and events.
  • Community Outreach and Engagement: develop communications materials outlining community perspectives on cultural and ecological values.
  • Some travel to communities, and work in remote locations may be required.

Requirements:

  • Must be a resident of the Northwest Territories, preferably Inuvialuit or Gwichiin Settlement region.
  • A full-time student under the age of 30 years and must be returning to college or University full-time in the fall (based on grant funding guidelines).
  • Project management and organizational abilities are required.
  • Previous research experience is preferred but not required.
  • Comfort in travelling and working in remote locations.
  • Experience with GIS, photography, and video are an asset.
  • Some training will be provided by WWF staff. 
  • Capable of taking periodic direction and working with minimal supervision, organizing his/her time and effort to accomplish goals.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Skills in word processing and working with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with the work and values of WWF.
  • Bilingual English/Inuvialuktun is an asset.

Other Information:

This is an 8 week contract position that will be based out of the Hunter and Trappers Committee (HTC) offices based in Aklavik, NWT.  The successful candidate will be remunerated for this internship.
