Building blocks in place for strong climate agreement

With less than a day and a half remaining for governments to make at COP21 in Paris, David Miller, WWF-Canada President and CEO, made the following statement:

“All the pieces are in place for governments to reach a strong agreement at the Paris climate change talks.

But there are still some big commitments to be made before we can demonstrate global progress and start moving down the road from Paris. Ministers now have less than two days to finalize an agreement that will help limit the world to 1.5C of warming – a crucial mark for some of the world’s most vulnerable places, including Canada’s Arctic.

The Arctic, all of Canada’s rich land and marine ecosystems and the species and communities across the country that rely on them need loopholes in the agreement to be closed, a pre-2020 review on progress towards targets, and very clear actions agreed by all nations for greenhouse gas reductions and adaptation to climate change that is already underway.”
