Associate Specialist, Western Arctic

Position Description

The Associate Specialist, Western Arctic will lead the implementation of WWF-Canada’s Clean Camps, Clean Coasts community-based project in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, NWT.  Clean camps, Clean Coasts aims to remove litter from hunting camps and coastal areas – a big issue in the north, where disposing of garbage is a real challenge.

The Associate Specialist, under the direction of the Specialist, Western Arctic, will also play a key role in organizing a WWF sponsored ‘Oceans Use Workshop’ in the fall of 2017. The workshop will bring together a variety of decision-making agencies within the Beaufort Sea region with the goal of reviewing the work that has been done to date and moving forward in the identification of marine areas that are in need of protection, areas that are suitable for economic development, and the development of management tools that will guide where and when various types of activities can occur. This role will lead on all workshop logistics and will also participate structuring the focus of the workshop to ensure the event acts as a significant contributor to WWF’s conservation goals related to ocean conservation and marine spatial planning in the Beaufort region. 

Key Responsibilities

Relationship Building 

  • Act as a representative for WWF-Canada in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and maintain good working relationships with key partner organizations and agencies.
  • Convene and organize meetings between WWF staff and northern stakeholders, as necessary. 

Initiate Field Projects 

  • Lead the implementation of WWF-Canada’s community-led field projects, including but not limited to, WWF’s Clean Camps, Clean Coasts program. 
  • Manage small to medium sized project budgets and prepare project reports to funders. 
  • Participate in the development of new project concepts/proposals and work planning activities.

Conservation Planning

  • Engage in research, consultation, and technical work supporting conservation planning. 
  • Contribute to, and draw expertise from, the conservation planning efforts of WWF-Canada’s Arctic Programme as a whole.

Communications

  • In consultation with communications staff, prepare written materials (blogs, fact sheets, web texts, reports) for public distribution as needed.  

What We Are Looking For:

  • University degree in Environmental Science, Resource Management or a suitable alternative, combined with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with conservation planning concepts.
  • Proven ability to manage projects and budgets, including coordinating project team members.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Previous experience designing and delivering community-based conservation projects, preferably in the Canadian Arctic.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Inuvialuit, Inuit and governmental agencies and decision making structures in the Western Arctic considered an asset.

This is a full-time 9 month contract based in Inuvik, NWT. Some travel within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region may be required.
