Associate Specialist, Renewable Energy

Position Description

WWF-Canada is committed to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050 or before. Diesel fuel is the primary energy source for Arctic communities in Canada – a dependency that has negative environmental impacts, high logistical and financial costs, negatively impacts and hinders the self-sufficiency of northern communities. Conservation and energy efficiency initiatives are already underway in the Yukon, NWT and Nunavut, making it more feasible for renewable energy to meet energy demand. Over the next three years, WWF-Canada will work to demonstrate that low-impact renewable energy, such as wind and solar, is possible and can contribute to sustainability in northern Canadian communities and a cleaner Arctic environment for species and people.

The Associate Specialist, Renewable Energy will drive progress towards meeting WWF-Canada’s multiple objectives for habitat-friendly renewable energy deployment in the Canadian Arctic including community engagement, renewable energy project financing and ownership model options, as well project management of the initial stages of two to three on-the-ground renewable energy deployment projects with several arctic communities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report and proposal writing for established and potential project funders
  • Logistic and administrative support related to organizing community consultation events, renewable energy focused conferences, and workshops, etc.
  • Creation of briefing notes related to a variety of renewable energy issues as required
  • Act as point person/community liaison for hamlets identified as a focus for renewable energy deployment
  • Prepare presentations related to renewable energy for senior staff members and on occasion deliver presentations related to renewable energy to external audiences
  • Proactively monitor renewable energy news and developments
  • Provide advice to all members of the renewables team based on research and science

What We Are Looking For:

  • University degree in Environmental Studies, Science, or a suitable alternative, combined with at least 2 years of relevant experience
  • Sound knowledge of principles and practice relating to project/program management
  • Strong written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners
  • Knowledge of conservation issues across Canada and specifically in the Arctic
  • Experience working within the renewable energy sector and/or experience working in the arctic would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with indigenous communities would be considered an asset
