Associate Specialist, Prospect Research

Position Description
 
WWF-Canada is seeking an experienced and highly strategic Associate Specialist, Prospect Research to join our major gifts fundraising efforts. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the Development team to identify prospects, better understand who our donors are, and provide recommendations to meet WWF’s funding needs. This role will be responsible for preparing comprehensive assessments of new funding opportunities which WWF may explore—individuals, corporations, foundations and government—based on publicly available information and internal WWF intelligence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and qualify new prospects to support WWF’s major gifts program.
  • Monitor, identify and report on government funding opportunities, providing strategic analysis on areas of particular interest for WWF.
  • Acquire, analyze and disseminate relevant information on current and/or new donors, funders and prospects in appropriate formats (profiles, rating memos, strategy backgrounders and qualified lists).
  • Identify the associates and acquaintances of senior volunteer leadership and donors through relationship-mapping to facilitate institutional involvement.
  • Determine estimated giving capacity, philanthropic interests and inclination to give; establish accurate capacity ratings based on clear understanding and analysis of financial reports.
  • Manage WWF’s major gift prospect clearance system within Canada.
  • Work in partnership with the Director to develop strategies to help move donors/prospects through the fundraising cycle.
  • Provide prospect management, research and Raiser’s Edge training to staff.
  • Some contact with donors and prospects, senior volunteer leadership and conservation staff.
  • Maintain and update constituent records.
  • Monitor media for major gift prospect information.
  • Assist with the evaluation of research resources.

 
What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree (with a concentration in Library and/or Information Science preferred).  Master’s degree or other graduate education desirable.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a research-related environment.
  • Experience with information resources and publications, including fundraising databases.
  • Previous fundraising experience and/or a background in a non-profit or conservation institution preferred.
  • Proficiency in Internet research is essential.
  • Knowledge of PIPEDA and best practices in privacy-related policies is an asset.
  • Clear understanding of the fundraising cycle and the function of prospect research in a fundraising team.
  • Proficiency of Raiser’s Edge database (or equivalent), including the creation of queries.
  • Knowledge of new trends in prospect research and prospect management.
  • Mastery in the collection, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of complex information.
  • Demonstrated capacity to create and maintain tools that accurately reflect, monitor and interpret the activity of the prospect pool.
  • Proven ability to set priorities, complete work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines
  • Exceptional organizational skills to effectively balance multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Highly developed communication and presentation skills, to communicate complex information in a clear and succinct manner.
