Position Description
 
WWF-Canada seeks an energetic and self-driven Associate Specialist, GIS to work in the Toronto Office, reporting to the VP of Science, Research & Innovation (SRI). The GIS Analyst supports the SRI team by providing mapping, database management and spatial analysis, to support WWF-Canada’s key program objectives. This role provides vital data and analysis to ensure WWF’s conservation advocacy and actions are based on strong, quantitative, conservation science.
 
Key Responsibilities
 

  • Work with WWF Conservation staff to develop quantitative, spatial analysis to support our priority programs.
  • Conduct research and data collection by assessing, compiling, and cataloguing baseline and spatial, biological, environmental, and traditional knowledge information.
  • Design, develop, and maintain geo-databases and a variety of scientific and spatial data.
  • Complete mapping and data analysis tasks, including spatial analysis, geo-processing, and developing scripts.
  • Deliver high-quality cartographic and research products within project deadlines

 
Requirements
 

  • Master’s degree in geography, ecology, environmental studies, resource management, or similar field plus at least one year related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to use GIS and remote sensing software, including Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions in ArcGIS 10.x.
  • Programming experience using Python is preferred
  • Strong database management skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Office or MySQL.
  • Strong cartographic and data visualization skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and research skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multi-person teams.
  • Experience with water, biodiversity, species or other conservation-related issues.
  • Working knowledge of scripting and programming in R statistical software would be an asset
  • Strong knowledge of renewable energy resources sector is preferred
  • Experience in a government, academic, ENGO or business setting working on conservation issues, or environmental assessment.

This is a full-time, permanent position located in our Toronto office.
