A Final Day in Churchill
The students worked on developing their action plans to take home and put into use. They have all come such a long way in their confidence and knowledge and I can’t wait to hear about all the great things they do to help spread the word about climate change, polar bears and the Arctic ecosystem. They are an amazing group of ‘kids’ and they really inspired me. It also reinforces the fact that the work we do at WWF-Canada is not in vain – the next generation of conservationists is already helping us – and this makes me determined to work even harder. We often hear more bad news than good in the field of conservation, but PBI’s Youth Leadership Camp is a good news story and one I was so proud to be a part of.
As we said our goodbyes before heading off in different directions, back to our lives at home, lots of tears were shed. The students had a hard time leaving not only a place they had fallen in love with, but the friends they had bonded with so closely. Even connecting with one person who shares your values and interests is a special experience, but the students (and even us facilitators) had made many connections on this trip. But although we said goodbye in Winnipeg, we left knowing that this was just the beginning – we will keep in touch and through our friendship, will stay motivated and keep fighting – together – for the Arctic, for polar bears and for all of us that call planet Earth our home.
