Specialist, Marine Conservation and Shipping
The Specialist, Marine Conservation and Shipping will provide expert advice to ensure delivery of the organization’s goal to reduce threats on wildlife, primarily related to shipping. They will support multiple projects that reduce shipping threats which are national in scope and, also, focus on threats that affect WWF-Canada’s priority geographical regions. The Specialist will liaise with staff across the organization on shared goals and represent WWF-Canada in external partnerships and forums as agreed with the Senior Specialist, Marine Conservation & Shipping.
- Contribute expertise and implement projects to advance priorities to reduce the impact of shipping on wildlife in Canada and its ocean territory, in line with WWF-Canada’s 10-year strategic plan.
- On behalf of WWF-Canada, maintain critical knowledge of the marine shipping sector and marine conservation including impacts of shipping on ecosystems and communities and remaining aware of best practices to sustain the well-being of both.
- Undertake research, consultation, and technical work regarding strategy and policy direction on marine conservation and shipping issues, such as underwater noise, decarbonization, ship strikes, infrastructure, voyage planning, and waste discharge streams.
- Engage across sectors and with partners (e.g., governments, Indigenous communities, civil society, coastal communities, academia, and marine industry partners) to identify and build opportunities to find solutions to actions or operations that pose a threat to wildlife habitat and climate stability in WWF-Canada’s geographic areas of focus.
- Build respect, trust and partnerships with Indigenous peoples, industry and other communities by understanding their priorities and role as key drivers behind achieving and benefiting from conservation outcomes.
- Contribute expertise on WWF-Canada’s positions on existing and new developments affecting the organization’s priority areas and priority species, and to conservation-support activities such as fundraising and communications.
- Take an evidence-based approach, with respect for Indigenous knowledge and priorities, to work with Indigenous and local communities, industry, all levels of government and other partners towards conservation outcomes.
- Manage the performance, and provide feedback to departmental interns.
- Post-secondary education and 2+ years of related experience, OR
4+ years of related experience.
- Knowledge of shipping activities, regulatory regimes, industry interests and best practices.
- Highly proficient in conducting research related to shipping and marine conservation.
- Experience working with Indigenous groups and community partners highly preferred.
- Deep expertise related to underwater noise, marine mammals and marine protection is considered as asset.
- Strong problem-solving, conflict-resolution, creative, and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach.
- Proven experience of effective collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with multi-partner groups, regionally, nationally and internationally to deliver on major conservation outcomes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of WWF-Canada’s mission and objectives, and a demonstrated passionate commitment to its success in accomplishing them.
- Inspired to develop conservation projects with real and practical impacts.
- Ability to build and maintain results-orientated relationships and partnerships internally and externally.
This role may require safe travel. Safe travel will be determined by following guidelines of Federal, Territorial and Provincial governments and following consultation with local and Indigenous communities.
This position can work from any WWF-Canada office. Work from Victoria, BC preferred; or work from home in British Columbia.
