Overview

The Senior Specialist, Carbon Monitoring position is a blend of project management and technical expertise to assist the Science, Knowledge and Innovation team to successfully achieve its ambitious goals as related to the 2030 Strategic Plan.

Reporting to the Vice President, SKI, the Senior Specialist will provide project management for the measurement of ecosystem carbon, including collaborating with local communities and First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation to support their leadership in implementation of their priorities for nature-based climate solutions projects. This role combines analysis tasks as well as practical application of scientific findings.

The Senior Specialist will also have a technical focus, including developing standards for measurement, monitoring and reporting of carbon benefits of protection, stewardship and restoration activities across various ecosystems. Further, this role will provide vital research, analysis, and recommendations to ensure that WWF-Canada’s conservation program is evidence-based.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Carbon Monitoring project, including identifying and managing project goals, tasks, budgets, timelines, involvement of staff and external contractors, as well as managing donor expectations and deliverables.
  • Lead and coordinate a carbon monitoring community of practice with local communities, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation academics, government and other key partners.
  • Co-create and validate scientifically credible external materials including protocols, tools, frameworks and resources for carbon measurement and associated community training, and integrate with or supplement First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation knowledge and practice when so desired by communities.
  • Develop new relationships and maintain existing relationships with community partners (including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation, academia, and local groups) by building trust, and promoting the importance of carbon measurement and associated tools for accurately informing and tracking conservation impacts.
  • Advise on knowledge mobilization for effective tools, resources, and data platforms.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of work experience in an environmental related field, with an emphasis on ecosystem carbon, behavioural science, and project management.
  • Post-secondary education in environmental science, conservation, natural resources, or related an asset.
  • Extensive experience in ecosystem carbon, including familiarity with nature-based carbon accounting methodologies and measurement systems.
  • Experience managing complex projects, including contracts, finances, staffing and workloads.
  • Experience in carbon measurement for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV).
  • Leading or involved in building various community and cross-cultural partnerships, including direct experience working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation communities.
  • Extensive experience in project management, budgeting, and project evaluation.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, or equivalent, or working towards is an asset.
  • Experience in delivering presentations to small and large groups of people.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary context.
  • Familiarity with First Nations Principles of Ownership, Control, Access and Participation, BC First Nations Data Governance Initiative, or other similar data sovereignty guidelines an asset.

Other Information

  • This position will require occasional local or national travel.
  • Starting Salary: $67,734 – $73,500
